A preeminent scientist -- and the world's most prominent atheist -- asserts the irrationality of belief in God and the grievous harm religion has inflicted on society, from the Crusades to 9/11. With rigor and wit, Dawkins examines God in all his forms, from the sex-obsessed tyrant of the Old Testament to the more benign (but still illogical) Celestial Watchmaker favored by some Enlightenment thinkers. He eviscerates the major arguments for religion and demonstrates the supreme improbability of a supreme being. He shows how religion fuels war, foments bigotry, and abuses children, buttressing his points with historical and contemporary evidence. The God Delusion makes a compelling case that belief in God is not just wrong but potentially deadly. It also offers exhilarating insight into the advantages of atheism to the individual and society, not the least of which is a clearer, truer appreciation of the universe's wonders than any faith could ever muster.

Brilliant Eye Opener

If you're one of those young self-acclaimed atheists who wants to deprecate over religion but you know little about what lies past the ridicule, this book is for you. If you're a citizen of society who is having some re-evaluations about life, or what to live for and why you see everything in a new light, this book is also for you. If you're a devout Christian who is happy to talk about God to your friends, see this book as a test of your faith. This book was made especially for you. I'm glad to have read this book at an age where I haven't fully grown into an adult and I guess it just serves as one of the first non-fiction books to have seriously given me new viewpoint in life but also an unwavering skepticism that follows me to my death. Dawkins always makes fantastic reads. The book brings readers on a journey of new-found wisdom, critical thinking and logical reasoning for the believer and non believer and attempts to trigger a reassessment of our beliefs and why we believe so strongly in them. Every chapter of the book is seamlessly structured with the next, tackling questions from the God hypothesis to whether or not religion is beneficial for society. It is a highly influential read and starts an interesting thought process which long stays with you after the final page is turned. If you have read Dawkin's publications before, you'll understand what I mean when I say he's truly one of the most powerful and well read of our time. And for those of you who don't know of Dawkin's works, trust me... it's one helluva ride, and you won't regret it.show more
