John Clellon Holmes was a Beat author and poet, as well as a professor. A close friend of Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and Neal Cassady, he is credited with writing the first Beat novel. He is also well-known for writing what is considered to be the definitive jazz novel of the Beat Generation, "The Horn."
