I have always been a language lover but one tongue always intimidated me with its many cases, declensions and verb tables - Latin. Being Australian there isn't much emphasis on this influential language as there should be and as there is in other countries such as the UK and US. After reading a few rave reviews of this book I decided to give it a go myself and I was amazed at how quickly i've picked up basic sentences. Linney has somehow made one of the most intimidating and boring subjects actually FUN to learn.
Designed for homeschooling and people of any age, besides the core pages where new words are taught you are also given pages both in English and Latin that introduce new grammatical concepts such as cases and personal verb endings. A boon, since there's no point teaching a new concept in a foreign language if you have no understanding of it in English, huh? Another additional feature is the Latin expressions that are spattered throughout. Soon enough you'll be the only person in the room able to understand the writing underneath logos and coats of arms (oh yeah!?). In addition to the above you get a list of said Latin expressions, answers to the questions, basic pronunciation rules in both Classical and Church Latin, a glossary of vocab, and a subject index to easily flip and revise grammatical concepts.
One would never use Latin and 'page turner' in the same sentence but it really is the best way to describe this book. The bite sized lessons build upon previous material and you are given more examples than you probably want. Note, Getting Started with Latin is greatly enhanced by visiting the website given in the preface and downloading all of Linney's free lesson commentaries and other goodies. If you read each lesson in order with the commentary on your audio device you'll definitely absorb it all faster. He can be a bit repetitive but he is passionate and practice makes perfect as they say.
Latin, a necessity in the modern age? Not for many but at $22 you could waste money on so many other useless items. Learning basic Latin gives you the power to unlock the etymologies of hundreds of words in English and you get to be the genius who casually throws in 'confusing' Latin expressions into your daily speech to the awe (and annoyance) of others.
Warning: you'll get hooked.

This book does exactly what it says. it is a very simple introduction to Latin. It is so easy at the beginning that you race through the lessons and quickly become 'hooked'. I have two other Latin curriculums (Curricula?) at home and failed to get through the first lesson. With this book I had completed up to lesson 34 over a long weekends holiday. By lesson 50 I understood enough to start lesson 1 of another Latin course. It is only an introduction to Latin and you will need a follow-up course, but he gives ideas for this on his website; he also provides free MP3 files for correct (Church and classical) pronunciation.
I am very happy with this book and can heartily recommend it to homeschoolers and adult learners.
