The review by The Bookbag summed up my reaction to Sue Ostlers fantastic, confidence inspiring flirting book - so here is the review in full.
"There are lots of timetabled books on the market, that promise to transform everything from your employability to the size of your thighs in a certain number of weeks, if you commit to their programme, and this book is really just another one to add to the 'scheduled self-improvement' pile. Except we're not talking here about dropping a dress size in time for Christmas, or sailing through that oh-so-important interview to land the job of your dreams...for this book is a 6 week guide to Getting Loved Up that promises to put its participants (and as you'll learn, you're more than a mere reader with this title) on the fast track to romance. Gosh.
The author, Sue, has been dubbed the Queen of Love and the UK's top relationship sexpert by the press, making her the ideal person to pen such a book, using her own dating history, and the story of her transformation from singleton to loved-up lady over the course of a few recent years. By the end, not only do you know all about her personal story, but you have a clear image of the type of woman she is too. This is one bubbly lady, and her personality jumps out at you from every page.
Flirt Diva is an interactive guide that offers advice but also encourages self-reflection. There are quizzes galore (you can find out what kind of flirt you are - cheeky, girly or tough love, for example, and answer questions about your grooming habits) but it also contains exercises to boost self-confidence and to focus the mind on exactly what you're hoping to achieve from it all. There's even a 'contract' to sign, to show your commitment to the cause.
More than half the book, though, is advice - on what to do, what not to do, and the consequences of both. It might take some doing, but by the end of the 6 week course you will no longer be backward about coming forward. In a perfect example of the old adage, nobody ever got ahead by sitting on their behind this book might take some readers out of their comfort zone in terms of the forcefulness of the actions, but it's realistic rather than aggressive, and as the author points out, if you're following the guide it's probably because things haven't worked out ideally in the past, so why not give a different approach a go?
You don't have to be quite so larger than life in the way the author is, but the book is a bit cheeky at times. I found it funny, not offensive, but let's just say it is rather heavy on innuendo, and ooh-er moments - at one point she mentions that she knows how to thrust out a cocky wink and then proceeds to tell us why flirting is better than sex: you can flirt safely while driving...you can flirt in front of your mother and so on.
I was surprised by just how much there was to say on the subject of flirting, but this book manages to tell you a great deal with no noticeable repetition. If you follow it as instructed, resist ploughing through it all in one go and instead read it a bit at a time to fit in with the 6 week, day by day guide, you'll have time to digest all the titbits of information, and incorporate them into your life. Approach it with an open mind and, by the end, when you come to graduation I guarantee you will truly have transformed yourself into a sexy, sassy, flirt diva."show more
