Product description

Perched on a little camping stool, artist Tommy Kane draws what he sees. His remarkable career has taken him around the world, and he has documented the people and places he's encountered in his unique painting and drawing style--on location--wherever he goes. He calls New York home, but has a growing international following. `An Excuse to Draw `is the first book-length collection of Kane's work, and it is filled with full-page illustrations and reproductions of pages taken from his sketch books. Kane has worked in advertising as a creative director for more than thirty years. His style is inspired by comic artists like R. Crumb and James Jean, and by `MAD Magazine`--but his interpretations of the world are decidedly original. With a bag filled with pens and watercolors, Kane records the world as he travels, bringing readers along for the ride. Witty descriptions and observations accompany the hand-drawn full-color illustrations found throughout the book. Beautifully produced and exquisitely designed, `An Excuse to Draw` is the perfect introduction to the world of Tommy Kane.

An excuse to draw is an amazing book. It is filled with many wonderful drawings of Tommy Kane throughout the countries he has visited. It's pretty much a travelogue, really. The little caption that accompanies every drawing is always fun to read because each of those allows you to know a little bit better of him. The book is big and comes in hardcover, you wouldn't regret buying this at all.

I love this book! As an aspiring artist, I am always looking for inspiration. I've bought many art books. Most of them sit on the shelf after the first run-through. Mr. Kane's book does not have the luxury of lazing around on the shelf. It goes to the cafe, to the kitchen, to the den, to the studio. Hell, it even goes to the bathroom with me. I have read it back to front, front to back and starting in the middle. Every time I look at a page, I see something new.

He has something to teach all of us about slowing down and savoring the details of life and living.

I highly recommend this book.

Tom's book is inspiring, moving, personal and funny. There are so many densely detailed drawings, full of insightful and wry observations, and beautifully reproduced to pack 3-4 "regular" books. I notice new details and drawings every time I open the book. I plan on buying more as the perfect present for friends and family.

This is one of those books that you just can?????????????????????????????????????????????¢??t put down, but you want to go through slowly and savor every beautiful detail. I don?????????????????????????????????????????????¢??t know what I like better, the beautiful pieces of art and their impressive attention to detail, or their equally amusing anecdotes. There are so many different little Easter eggs to find in this book that I don?????????????????????????????????????????????¢??t think I will ever be done looking through it. This is just such a great book and I can?????????????????????????????????????????????¢??t find enough good things to say about it.

I just received my copy of Tommy Kane's An Excuse to Draw. Wow! A big sturdy book, like the way they used to make them. The paper is heavy stock of the finest quality and the printing is breathtaking. I have seen a sampling of these drawings on Tommy's blog but here they come to life. Every line, brushstroke, and pencil mark is there before your eyes. Astounding. There are pages and pages of gorgeous drawings, some familiar, but many more new to me. I am especially am enthralled with the pen only images from his moleskine sketchbooks - such purity and strength in line alone. While I am tempted to forsake the weekend and gulp this book down in one long go, I will not. This is a feast of drawings so rich it deserves to be savored slowly, piece by piece.
An Excuse to Draw is the kind of treasure that only comes along once in a long while. It will be on my bedside table for some time to come.
