The adjective 'Chekhovian' is often used to praise short stories, but what does it really mean? American short-story writer Ford admits he read too little Chekhov too early, and only corrected this fault when asked to choose the best 20 out of over 220 stories by the great Russian master for this collection. The subtlety, precision and understated grace of the Russian writer's stories are fully evident in Ford's well-chosen selection.
