"The only thing more fun than an October Daye book is an InCryptid book." --Charlaine Harris Ghoulies. Ghosties. Long-legged beasties. Things that go bump in the night... The Price family has spent generations studying the monsters of the world, working to protect them from humanity--and humanity from them. Enter Verity Price. Despite being trained from birth as a cryptozoologist, she'd rather dance a tango than tangle with a demon, and is spending a year in Manhattan while she pursues her career in professional ballroom dance. Sounds pretty simple, right? It would be, if it weren't for the talking mice, the telepathic mathematicians, the asbestos supermodels, and the trained monster-hunter sent by the Price family's old enemies, the Covenant of St. George. When a Price girl meets a Covenant boy, high stakes, high heels, and a lot of collateral damage are almost guaranteed. To complicate matters further, local cryptids are disappearing, strange lizard-men are appearing in the sewers, and someone's spreading rumors about a dragon sleeping underneath the city... "Discount Armageddon" is the first installment of the highly praised "InCryptid" series.

Seanan McGuire is a California-based author with a strong penchant for travel and can regularly be found just about anyplace capable of supporting human life (as well as a few places that probably aren't). Early exposure to a vast number of books left her with a lifelong affection for the written word, and led, perhaps inevitably, to her writing books of her own, starting somewhere around the age of eleven. The "October Daye "novels are her first urban fantasy series, and the "InCryptid" novels are her second series, both published by DAW and bother of which have put her in the" New York Times "bestseller list. Seanan was the winner of the 2010 John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer; "Rosemary and Rue," the first novel in the "October Daye "series, was named one of the Top 20 Paranormal Fantasy Novels of the Past Decade; and her novel "Feed," written under the name Mira Grant, was named as one of "Publishers Weekly's "Best Books of 2010. She also won a Hugo for her podcast, and is the first person to be nominated for five Hugo Awards in a single year. You can visit her at www.seananmcguire.com.

Discount Armageddon is the first installment of Seanan's InCryptid series. I have to admit; if it hadn't been thrust into my hands by a friend (and then promptly led to the sales counter) I probably wouldn't have read it based on its cover. Half dressed female, posing provocatively with a samurai sword strapped to her back and gun in hand. "No thankyou" was my first thought. I distinctly remember thinking that this would be another 'I'm a supposedly strong independent woman, but I need a man to come sweeping in at the last moment to save me. Like, every single time.' Those books make me sad.
I am not ashamed to say that I was wrong. Oh so wrong. The scantily clad cover makes sense when you realize the context it's done under. Verity Price is a professional ballroom dancer (hence the ability to run better in heels than in flats), who fights supernatural crime in her evenings and just so happens to have a colony of talking mice who worship her. Seriously, I want I colony of mice that make festivals of off handed comments I make.
There's also a love interest, which is less, 'I need a good strong man to save me' and more 'You are cute. I think I will keep you around'. A relationship based off mutual respect and quick witted lines, I love it.
The writing is fast paced, action packed and filled with quirky throw out lines. I found myself quickly immersed in the universe of this book .

"Mixing mythology and monster lore (plus a good helping of snark), "Discount Armageddon "is fast-paced, funny and boasts a salty-sweet heroine who can cha-cha, foxtrot, and kick ass--or any combination thereof--while she sprints her way across the rooftops of Manhattan, policing and protecting the denizens of New York City's supernatural community."---Amber Benson, author of HOW TO BE DEATH
