Short Description for Delusions of Gender Sex discrimination is supposedly a distant memory. This title dispels the pseudo-scientific claims about the differences between the sexes. It shows how old myths, dressed up in the scientific finery, help perpetuate the status quo. It reveals the mind's plasticity, and shows the influence of culture on identity.

  • Great, thorough, logical writing - everyone should read this!5

Caroline Lipinski Fine provides excellent arguments and research examples to highlight the lack of credibility in biobunk 'essentialist' notions of gender roles. She argues that gender is socially constructed and that the human brain and mind is very malleable and sensitive to the environment surrounding it. Our emotions and mental characteristics are influenced by even the smallest litte things in our surroundings. She highlights the importance of implicit associations, for example, in how many legal forms place 'male' before 'female', and she strongly makes a case for examples like these actually affecting gender inequality. My only complaint would be that troughout the book she writes the word 'male' before 'female' every time, which is understandable since it's so deeply ingrained in our culture to say those words in that hierarchical order that places men above women, but this itself has implicit consequences, which Fine's book makes a strong case for. Well worth a read for anyone from any field of study - it will always be relevant to you. Happy reading! I might mention that she is quite funny too, which is a nice touch to an outstanding academic book. I felt empowered after reading this book; moving away from a sexist society is dependent on disseminating great research that debunks popular gender myths. 5 out of 5. by Caroline Lipinski
