The Report of the National Committee of Inquiry into Higher Education (the Dearing Committee), Higher Education in the Learning Society, is widely recognised as a major landmark in the modern history of UK higher education. Although its most immediate outcome was the decision to introduce tuition fees, it has had considerable influence across a broad spectrum of issues, with a very large number of its 93 recommendations having been implemented. In this volume three main themes are examined: the impact over ten years of the Dearing Report; the process representing by the work of the National Committee of Inquiry, including in an international context; current issues and future prospects for UK higher education policy and practice in the light of this history. Professor Sir David Watson is currently Principal of Green Templeton College, University of Oxford. Previously he was Professor of Higher Education Management at the Institute of Education, University of London. His academic interests are in the history of American ideas and in higher education policy. At the time of publication, Michael Amoah was a Research Officer at the Institute of Education, University of London. He was a lecturer at Middlesex University and a Policy Officer seconded from the Higher Education Directorate of the Department for Education and Skills. Jonathan Adams is the lead founder of Evidence Ltd, a company specialising in research performance analysis and interpretation which produces the UK Higher Education Research Yearbook. Ronald Barnett is Emeritus Professor of Higher Education and Consultant at the Institute of Education, University of London. At the time of publication, Rachel Bowden was Deputy Head of Planning in the Strategic Planning Unit at the University of Brighton. Prior to this she was a research fellow in the university's Education Research Centre. Gareth Parry is Professor of Education and Director of the ESRC Study of Universal Access and Dual Regimes of Further and Higher Education at the University of Sheffield. At the time of publication, Dr David Smith was a Principal Research Fellow and Director of the Higher Education Policy Unit at the School of Education, University of Leeds.
