Reviews for The Dark Unwinding
Eccentric Cast of Characters Make the Story
The eccentric cast of characters in this book is what made the story for me. Katharine on her own is interesting enough, but surround her with her uncle, a creative and lovely apprentice, a mute child with bunny rabbit in tow, a lady's maid that doesn't ever stay quiet, well, the list goes on - but these characters are all wonderful on their own and even more intriguing when they are playing off of one another.
I was a bit disappointed in the mystery part of the story and didn't like the reasoning for what was behind all of it. It seemed a bit of a stretch, a bit out of place, and a bit too simple underneath it all. The ending came to a close very quickly and very neatly, I almost wish it hadn't so that there would have been more to the story, more places for these odd characters to go.
This isn't heavy on the steampunk - basically it's just the creations that her uncle creates and I would have liked to have seen more of those out in the community that he lives in. It would be wonderful for a second book to feature more of that to give it more of a steampunk feel. I certainly wouldn't mind reading more about Katharine and her uncle.
