Reviews for DC Comics
a must-have book for any comic fan, artist, graphic illustrator, art and cultural historian.'...sci-fi pulse.net, July, 2010.....
As you know, we at GeekTown are huge comic book fans, so when DC's publicity people offered to send me an early release of their DC Comics 75th Anniversary Poster Book for review I jumped at it! The book is around A3 in size, and contains 100 â?~ready to frame' posters of DC Comic covers throughout the years - From the front cover of â?~New Fun' in 1935, through to one Alex Ross's stunning cover's for 2008′s â?~Batman R.I.P.' run. Each cover comes with a commentary on the artwork by Robert Schnakenberg , explaining the background of how it came about, and why it's included in the book as an important DC issue. Every page edge is perforated, so (if your so inclined) you can easily remove the pages and hang them on your wall. Personally, i rather like them in book form though. If your a fan of DC Comics, the DC Comics 75th Anniversary Poster Book really is a â?~must have' addition to your collection....Geek Town, July, 2010
This is a book to lose yourself in, a journey through the sprawling history of DC comics that is never anything less than visually awe-inspiring and a pleasure to read...Alternative Magazine online, August, 2010
Celebrate the 75th anniversary of DC comics with 500 of the most recognized and famous comic covers in history!
This Anniversary Poster Book celebrates 75 years of the most famous comics in history by showcasing 500 of their most memorable covers - including 100 full-size posters, ready-to-frame! Arranged in chronological order, each poster is a milestone in DC comics history, and possibly in cultural history, too. From the first appearance of Superman in Action Comics #1 - easily the most sought-after comic of all time - the introduction of iconic Batman, and firm favorites like Wonder Woman and Shazam, the unsettling The House of Mystery and Strange Adventures, or Mr. District Attorney, the relative innocence of Falling in Love, to more adult themes that addressed social concerns like Green Arrow's sidekick Speedy being a heroin addict, The Killing Joke, Preacher, Alan Moore's ground-breaking, taboo-shattering Swamp Thing, Ronin, Sandman, Angel and the Ape, 100 Bullets, each of the covers featured is a landmark in introducing recognizable characters to us, breaking free from the restraints of censorship, reflecting an era, questioning and highlighting social concerns, showing how artwork changes over the years, questioning the definition of human, or simply being the first comic you picked up to read.
On the reverse of each poster are images of related covers, concept sketches and commentary on these from some cover artists, capturing the rich legacy of DC Comics - the â?~capes and tights' of Batman, Catwoman, et al, romance, westerns, horror, science-fiction, as well as the kooky and outright odd from Jerry Lewis and comedy legend Bob Hope, up to the best work from contemporary Vertigo artists, including V for Vendetta and Watchmen, making this a must-have book for any comic fan, artist, graphic illustrator, art and cultural historian.

We've had fights, reader, actual fights in the office about which comic publisher was better, Marvel or DC.Obviously these fights have been using our secret super powers and not in any way actually physical - no journalists were harmed in the making of this review.Regardless of which camp you fall into (and trust us, camp is definitely the word in this particular case) this oversized poster book featuring the artwork of DC is gorgeous and a fantastic collection for fans of comics and pop art in general. As the title would suggest it's to celebrate 75 years of DC, so doesn't automatically focus on their leading characters Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman (although they are the focus of the cover). Instead the 100 ready-to-frame covers that are featured include the "most incredible, most outrageous and most bizarre", with notes about the artist and title by Robert Schnakenberg on the reverse of each print. Our favourite - and god bless whoever it was at Quirk books that had the sense of humour to choose this one - is issue 55 of Superboy, which features the teen hero being spanked by his school principal. Hilariously Schnakenberg notes that a mere 20 issues later the same artist depicted Superboy once more being spanked on the cover. OK... Least said...Other classics include Falling In Love, Heart Throbs, Girls' Love, Girls' Romances and an issue of Lois Lane where's she's inexplicably turned into a black woman. No, really.Of course, it's not all camp hilarity, there are some classic and iconic covers presented the further you get into the book, including the legendary Batman: The Killing Joke, Watchmen and Sandman.
Far, far too beautiful to actually tear up and frame when it should be sat on an expensive coffee table - you'll just have to buy two copies...Pink Paper, Sept, 2010 by mat archer
