Author information

Allan Ahlberg, a former teacher, postman, plumber's mate and grave digger, is in the super-league of children's writers. He has published over 100 children's books and, with his late wife Janet, created such award winning picture books as Each Peach Pear Plum and The Jolly Postman - both winners of the Kate Greenaway Medal. His latest book - Kicking a Ball, illustrated by Sebastien Braun was published in May. He has also written prize-winning poetry and longer fiction. He lives in Bath, and, to avoid distractions, writes from a shed in his garden!

Editorial reviews

"Ho ho for the robbers/The cops and the robbers Ho Ho!" So goes the refrain to the Ahlbergs' account, in heel-kicking five-line stanzas, of how officer Pugh foils a London gang's Christmas-Eve theft of children's toys. The illustrations, in their Burglar Bill comic style but softer colors, provide the details; sometimes there are up to twelve small pictures per double page, functioning as sly footnotes to the jiggy narrative. In short, this is another of the Ahlbergs' brisk capers, with no great haul for anyone but amusing in its childlike touches - as when the five robbers knock Pugh to the ground, de-pants him then sit on him crying "Give up, give up!"
