From Norway, with some difference: a well-rounded program for getting a grip on oneself through improved physical and mental health. Waltz, you'll recall, is the Norwegian who has won the New York City Marathon four times in the last five years; collaborators Str mme and Ratio are respectively professors of physiology and social science at the Norwegian College of Physical Education and Sport. They propound a training technique for constructive thinking: "a method for directing your mind to control your reactions." Based on concentration exercises, this involves the familiar technique of repeating psychological one-liners - "My neck is relaxed," "I feel fresh and bright" - to relax and then become alert. These activities are integrated into a program of regular physical activity (stretching, jogging), good diet (the nutrition advice is sound), adequate rest, and avoidance or control of high-risk factors (smoking, alcohol and drugs, excessive weight). With a needed push for exercise that was missing from Dean Ornish's Stress, Diet and Your Heart, this is no quick fix. Helpful - if not novel. (Kirkus Reviews)
