Product description

P: Who is the real terrorist in this room? M: What're you saying? In a claustrophobic concrete cell, two men face each other across a bare table. One is a wanted terrorist, the other a British intelligence officer. But this is no ordinary interrogation, and as they talk deep into the night and violent secrets are revealed, the line between interrogator and confessor begins inextricably to blur. Who, then, is the real terrorist? And will they pay for their guilt in blood?

What is terrorism? Who is the real terrorist? Can state actors be terrorists? Let us think about George Washington, Nelson Mandela, and Yasser Arafat. Are they all terrorists? In this specific book (or novel), Richard Jackson, one of the world's leading scholars in critical terrorism studies (CTS), challenges the traditional understanding of terrorism and terrorists, and addresses many tough questions that are rarely discussed in scholarship and news media. Confessions of a Terrorist provides a whole new reading experience and critical lens for its readers to think about the terrorist threats emphasised by the authorities and powerful worldmaking elites. In the past decades, terrorism is discursively constructed and perceived as a negative ideography, or cultural taboo, in Western societies. However, through a way of story-telling, the 'Professor' makes a clear statement about terrorism and terrorists, and creates a space for further discussion on contemporary terrorism-related issues, such as torture, drone strikes, state terrorism, and national surveillance. This book is definitely a great book for anyone who wants to further understand the 'real' world that we live in! And, importantly, it is a book that tells different 'truths' about the Western-led 'war on terror.'

Review quote

'On a breathtaking journey through the intricacies of a counter-terrorism interrogation, Richard Jackson asks us to confront one of the most difficult truths of our time: that to identify "the terrorist" is to look in the mirror and see oneself.' - Elizabeth Dauphinee, author of The Politics of Exile 'Extraordinarily intense ... A book that's too important not to read.' - Morning Star
