Review quote

"This book 'aims to present a practically oriented approach to the medical and surgical problems of the cancer patient. It is intended for a wide clinical audience: medical students, interns. residents, practitioners.' For the most part, the book fulfills its aims. Its problem-oriented case-method approach is particularly enlightening for those who are involved in everyday cancer care. Though it is informative and clinically useful, the book avoids a cookbook approach to problem solving. Instead, the focus is on realistic options in management. Thus, the busy practitioner will find that problems in cancer care that are directly related to the disease process itself or indirectly related to iatrogenic interventions are handled in a meaningful, straightforward, and palatable way. Initial chapters discuss three neglected but important areas: communication issues between the doctor and the patient, nutritional support, and physical rehabilitation. Maximization of patient integrity, whether this be psychological independence in choice of treatment or physical freedom in the activities of daily living, is the focal area of this section. Specific suggestions to maximize patient function are plentiful. Palliating, rather than curing, can and should be an honorable and active pursuit. The remainder of the book is organized by the various organ systems." -- New England Journal of Medicine
