• Fortunately for posterity, Colonel Bob Piper, a paratroop officer in the 82nd Airborne Division during WWII, chose to disregard the order against taking a camera into combat in all six of his campaigns. B&w photos from his collection offer a unique record of a 2000-man parachutist squadron, and the role of one "Red Cross girl." The book begins with an illustrated narrative of Piper's service in various countries, and then displays numerous b&w historical photos in chronological order, with detailed captions. As a member of the regimental staff, one of Piper's tasks was ensuring the wellbeing of the only female 'member' of the squadron, American Red Cross worker Evelyn "Steve" Stevens. She is photographed in full paratrooper gear as a record of her attempts to make jumps disguised as a male soldier. Piper and Stevens later married. Text is presented in side-by-side English and French. A subject index is not provided. This is the second volume in historian DeTrez's WWII paratrooper portrait series.
