Don't miss "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones," now a major motion picture. Discover this first installment of the internationally bestselling Mortal Instruments series and "prepare to be hooked" ("Entertainment Weekly"). When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder--much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing--not even a smear of blood--to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy? This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know... Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

It so difficult to put into words how incredible this series is. I remember my sister telling me to read it for ages, and last year I finally began reading. These are by far my favourite books in the entire world which I have re read multiple times! It is such an amazing world in which I can escape to and the plot and characters begin to feel like family. I have read all six plus the prequel series and honestly have been telling everyone to do the same!
From one reader to another- trust me. Read this book and you will be desperate to read the rest! I highly recommend it with all my heart.

I remember picking this book up from the book store around October 2011, and I've been in love with it and Cassie's writing ever since.
Firstly: The characters. Oh. My. God. They are all so well-rounded, realistic and likeable/lovable...like how does someone even do that? Its a fantasy world! But Cassie's work is so impeccably written and emotionally rich that it draws you in and keeps you there until the final page.
I loved the tension between Clary and Jace. To be honest, that was the primary thing that made me want to keep reading. And then all of a sudden...omg. That infamous plot twist. But you'll soon find out what that one is ;)
I loved how it was set in modern day New York, but was also set in the invisible society of the Shadowhunters. It made the whole thing feel very real. Also, because of the way it was set I found that the descriptions wasn't washed over like with some fantasy novels; Clare has obviously gone to said city and experienced it for herself. We see the effects of this in the elegant prose of her writing- I've never been to New York (I'm a New Zealander), but for some reason I feel like I know the city a little bit now. (not geographically, like the smells and stuff...idk. JUST READ IT!)
To conclude, book depository people, you need to read this book. It is by far the most impressive Young Adult novel i have ever read (on equal par with Clare's 'infernal devices' series. you have to read them to! but that's another review). Over and out.

Okay, this review is going to be short and quick to the point! (Hopefully?)
This book overall was amazing. The concept of the world that Cassandra Clare created is absolutely stunning and AWESOME! The only thing I disliked about this book, is that there was just too much information! In each chapter, well most of the chapters, dedicated on giving so much information which made it really hard for me to carry on reading. The book IS amazing, so are the rest of the books that follows the series, It just this book that was really hard to adjust to, because it is a NEW WORLD, that you have to understand. So I do appreciate the fact that after reading this first book of this series, I understood the others very well. But if I could change one thing about this book is that there should be less information on the Shadowhunter world and that it should of been explained little by little in the first two book, rather than in this one book. I did sometimes feel as if I was in a school lesson! Seriously, I recommend everyone to read this book! It is sooooooooo good! The series gets better when you read each book!
I would give it a 4.5 stars!

I read City of Bones for the first time back in 2009, so this wasn't my first time reading it. I never continued on with the rest of the series, even though I loved City of Bones. Reading it for the second time was just as enjoyable as the first time, especially after four years! I forgot about a lot of the things that happened, so it was a great refresher to re-read it so I could continue the series!
I don't really know what to say about this book; it's absolutely amazing. It was just as intriguing and compelling the second time around reading it than it was the first time. The world may contain a lot of the same type of supernatural/fantasy beings that are in a lot of other books in the same genre, but Cassie completely makes them her own and everyone in this series has a certain place. The Shadow Hunters, which work for the Clave and kill Demons and anything that breaks the Clave's law. The "Downworlder's"such as the vampires, werewolves, fairies and every other creatures you can imagine.
Don't want to go into more detail on that in case of spoilers, so I'll stop there. But the world is amazing and real and vivid and you just don't want to stop reading.
And the characters. Phew. Some of them make me want to smack them, but it's only sometimes and besides that I really kind of like all of the characters. Even the villain, which I'm not going to say his name, makes me like him. Well, not really "like" him. I hate him. But I hate him so much to where it's a good thing because he seems real. I have such strong emotions to each character!
Overall, City of Bones became a favorite book when I read it the first time around, and it's definitely still up there on my list of favorites this second time around and I'll definitely be coming back for another round with this book later on in the future after I've finished the series. Great story line, great characters, completely unique and enjoyable and one of those books you just can't put down, and the writing is amazing. Cassandra definitely knows how to tell a story.
I can't wait for the movie! Comes out in 4 days! (Note: This review was written in August, but may not be posted until September!) I may post a review of the movie too later on. :)
"City of Bones has everything: vampires, werewolves, faeries, true love, and stuff that blows up. What's more, Clare's characters are brilliant -- she better not kill any of them off in the next two volumes!"--Justine Larbalestier, author of Magic or Madness
