Reviews for Christopher Lloyd
Christopher Lloyd His Life at Great Dixter
I came to read this book via 'Lutyens and the Edwardians' by Jane Brown. Without that connection I might not have bought the book and that would have been my loss. The book is split into two halves; Christopher's life with his mother, Daisy, and his life after her death. The writing style is uncomplicated and the book is chronological. Characters are introduced systematically and are well-rounded. Their place in the life of both Lloyd and Great Dixter are made clear. For people who like a start, middle and end, this is a well constructed book. That leaves the brain free to concentrate on the gardening and the flowers, which was the main obsession of Lloyd's life - after his mother. Even here, the book is not overloaded with obscure plant names but can be understood and enjoyed by a non-gardener. The best thing about the book is that the reader is transported into another time and another life effortlessly and that makes the reading of it enjoyable and rewarding. by Gisela Radant Wood
