The 20th century has been marked as much by the invention of trivial necessikties as it has by the atomic bomb or the jumbo jet. This book celebrates the unsung heroes of invention. What has made the world as we know it? What is the crucial invention of the 20th century? The computer, air travel, the telephone the Internet? But this is to ignore the claims of the razor blade, the battery, the ballpoint pen and the brassiere. Who has not used a post it note and thought, ' How did we ever manage without' A celebration of these unsung heroes, Century Makers takes a fascinatingly oblique look at our lives and times.

Review text

The best thing since sliced bread (introduced in 1928 - see page 68)! Many of these unsung heroes have been chosen for their phenomenal popularity (Hamburger, Pizza Delivery); some for their time-saving qualities (Electric Washing Machine, Microwave Oven), but the most interesting are the real life savers: Traffic Lights, Child-Resistant Cap, Car Seat Belt, Fake Fur. Each comes with a short, potted history and illustrations which reinforce the humour lurking within. Don't quibble about what isn't there - enjoy what is and accept that you depend on rather more of these items than you may care to admit. (Kirkus UK)
