DescriptionWhen Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty facade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils...Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations? A big novel about a small town, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling's first novel for adults. It is the work of a storyteller like no other.

Christina P It's all in the detail
The detail and intrigue, and the entangled connections of the characters make â€~The Casual Vacancy' one of my top reads this year. Sometimes I had to go back and reread sections to make sure I was on the right track - and I usually wasn't! Having not read Rowling's Potter series (I did see the movies), I started this book with no preconceptions. For me, the idea of Barry's death causing such polarisation in the community, and the way in which Rowling drip feeds the details of the personal secrets and lives of the characters makes this story fascinating, and it becomes increasingly so as the â€~facts' are revealed. I enjoyed the detail - like Elizabeth George and PD James - immaculate detail. by Christina P
