Better than the first
Originally reviewed on my blog: http://sikbookreviews.blogspot.ca
Story: I liked this story much more than the first book of the series (Need). I found that this plot line is better developed and more captivating. I wanted to keep reading and to know what was going to happen. And the end of the novel made me itch to read the third of the series. Unlike the first book (where I pretty much predicted everything that was going to happen), this book was different. It surprised me! Yay! That is an accomplishment in my eyes. One BIG surprise in particular really took me off guard. Ahhh! If you read this book, you will know what I'm talking about!
Characters: All the main characters are the same, likeable characters. Zara develops quite nicely in this book. And there is a new character, Astley, who I think I like. Astley is the new king pixie in town, but he claims to be different - he claims to be good. I like the way he is presented (just hope we can trust him!).
Writing: The writing quality is better in this book. It is still a bit weak, but it was able to captivate my interest. There are a few errors (or typos), but nothing really worth mentioning. I only mention the errors because there were soooo many in the first book. Big improvement here!
Uniqueness/Creativity: This book was also much better in the uniqueness and creativity department. Jones came up with unique and creative elements that I've never heard of before. So, yay! Good for her! And I didn't feel like I was reading Twilight this time!!
Overall: Overall, this book was good. It kept my interest so that I wanted to keep reading. I am itching to read the third book of the series! Can't wait to see what happens! Would I recommend this book? I would recommend it to anyone who really liked Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. If you are bothered by weak quality of writing, then I would suggest staying away. It's a good story, but the quality is a bit weak. Side note: I totally like how the king pixies need a queen in order to be strong(er) - I think it's awesome that women are needed by the men in this way! Hehe :) by Samunder review Reviewed by Andrea for TeensReadToo.com
CAPTIVATE by Carrie Jones starts off a couple of months after Zara and her friends figured out a way to solve the pixie problem - but they knew it was only temporary.
A new king, a much younger, good-looking king, comes into the picture and thinks that Zara is destined to be his queen.
Astley, the new king, thinks that pixies are like humans and that some are good and some are evil. But when the trapped pixies become a problem once again, Zara must decide whether or not to turn into a pixie to keep her loved ones safe.
While I enjoyed CAPTIVATE, I didn't love it as much as I did NEED. Without giving away why, a little over half-way through the book, it became so sad for me. I felt so badly for Zara and could feel her pain.
That being said, I'm not sure what I feel about Astley, the new king. While I love Nick, the werewolf and Zara's boyfriend, I found myself at times loving Astley, too. I couldn't decide if he was truly a good pixie, or if he was just scheming and tricking Zara.
The ending of the book is a definite cliffhanger for me, and I can't wait to read the third book in the series! by TeensReadToo
