Reviews for Breath
Underwhelming
This was my first Tim Winton book and I must say I was underwhelmed - to the point of just wishing it would end so I could get onto something more rewarding.
It was a book I've longed wanted to read after seeing extracts that seemed to suggest a literary wordsmith. Winton also has a solid reputation with Australian literary critics.
Breath starts out as a promising story about the nature of adrenaline junkies but then gets lost in a reminiscence about a surfing adolescence. Overlayed is a rather clichéd introspection about failing as a father but being a good bloke underneath it all.
Its almost as if the author lost interest and decided to write about surfing because that's where his comfort zone is. Maybe this is why he lost me - I have never surfed. by Michael A. Crowe
