Product description

This little piggy went to market, and this little piggy went to the catwalk ...And what wonderful models our porcine friends turned out to be! The result is this stunning collection of portraits of pigs strutting their stuff as only creatures weighing up to 500lb apiece can. Featuring commissioned studio photography of championship breeds styled to perfection prior to competition, the animals here just love to hog the limelight. The top breeds from around the world are represented - from the graceful Large Black to the aristocratic Tamworth and the much-travelled Kune-Kune - with graphic charts containing all the essential breed information. There's also a potted history of pigs, plus reportage photography oif the behind-the-scenes primping and preening at the agricultural shows, to capture the care that is lavished on the prizewinning pigs and the nail-biting judging process. This is a book to gladden the hearts of pig-lovers, be they city dwellers with a trotter in the country or country dwellers with a dozen trotters in the farm yard. Packed with visual and textual breed information, it is a unique gift book to make every reader feel, well, happy as a pig in muck...

Author information

ANDY CASE is one of Britain's most well respected pig breeders, and has many years' experience specializing in rare breed pigs such as the Kune Kune, Middle White, and Oxford Sandy and Black. He and his wife currently keep a 25-sow herd of Oxford Sandy and Blacks, and 7 Kune Kune sows in their farm in Dorset. Andy was also one of the first breeders to import rare Kune Kune pigs into the UK from New Zealand in 1996. ANDREW PERRIS has tackled a wide range of challenging commissions during the 20 years he has worked as a photographer. Many have included animals, from snails on location to elephants in the studio, but pigs have to be the ultimate challenge so far because they simply do not stand still! That said, he has learned along the way and has met some fantastic characters (and pigs). His numerous corporate and advertising clients include Virgin, Sainsburys, Parker Pens, P&O Ferries, and Royal Bank of Scotland.

Review quote

The rehabilitation of the pig after Swine Flu starts here. Guaranteed to bring a fond smile to pig-lovers everywhere. Saga Stubborn and traditionally unkemp, the pig is an unlikely candidate for a photoshoot. But they can scrub up rather nicely. Daily Telegraph Smelly they may be, but there's something quite loveable about pigs. Beautiful Pigs by Andy Case portrays them in all their glory. Northern Echo A stunning collection of porcine portraits. Daily Express Primped, polished and looking positively gorgeous. Cotswold Life Some may think the title sounds like a bit of an oxymoron, but this gorgeous book is packed with Andrew Perris's glamourous piggy portraits. You certainly don't have to be a pig enthusiast to be charmed by the quirky beauties in this book. Country-side Andrew Perris undertook this unusual commission to illustrate a book on the different breeds of pig and simply outdid himself. In these stunning stark portraits, Perris manages to capture porcine facial expressions and convey a different mood in each shot. If Irving Penn and Tim Flach had collaborated on a project they might have come close to this. Amateur Photographer
