Editorial reviews

Devotees of ancient warfare will be delighted by this chronological compendium of 667 battles, going from Ithome in the First Messenian War (about 724BC) to the rather more famous Actium (31BC). Handsomely presented, with tables, maps, and indices, the book describes each battle in order, drawing on the narratives of Greek and Roman historians, whose accounts are also assessed for reliability. Where possible the reasons for the conflict are given, setting it in context, and there are frequent charts of troop deployments. Ideal for 'fans' and a useful background tool for general students.
