    Review text
Inimitable diarist, erudite historian and eminent architectural expert James Lees-Milne's early memoir - first published in 1970, now re-issued - is endearingly self-deprecating, touching, and very funny. We are indebted to him for the work he did for the National Trust and for volumes of frank and fascinating diaries, so it is good to be reminded of his early years, before he found his vocation. A sensitive, pious child with a philistine father, he suffered agonies of embarrassment, which he sublimated into hilarious stories: the awkward arrival at prep school, an 'early exit' from Eton, humiliating ineptitude in the army, crossed swords with the martinet Sir Roderick Jones. Sadly, Lees-Milne died last year. He has left a minor classic. (Kirkus UK)
