Gripping, eye-opening, and powerful, American Sniper is the astonishing autobiography of SEAL Chief Chris Kyle, who is the record-holding sniper in U.S. military history. Kyle has more than 150 officially confirmed kills (the previous American record was 109), though his remarkable career total has not been made public by the Pentagon. In this New York Times bestselling memoir, Kyle shares the true story of his extraordinary decade-long career, including his multiple combat tours in Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom) and elsewhere from 1999-2009. Kyle's riveting first-person account of how he went from Texas rodeo cowboy to expert marksman and feared assassin offers a fascinating view of modern-day warfare and one of the most in-depth and illuminating looks into the secret world of Special Ops ever written.

Positives: From a "bloke's" perspective this book is a fun ride. The author takes you through his Navy SEAL training regime; the hazings; the banter and the camaraderie that exists in the team. He spends a good deal of time talking through the various weaponry and its pros / cons; the kit he carried in battle and reminisces on an incredible number of skirmishes he found himself in over his years. The author is a redneck in all senses of the word, a good 'ol boy from Texas, and he makes it pretty clear that this is the case and this attitude comes through in his writing.
Negatives: By the end of the book I was well over all the death and carnage. While I expected a book of this nature not to talk about much else, rather than going into specific incidents in a high level of detail or drama the author covers a large number of incidents, most with a smaller amount of information on how it all happened. So you find yourself flicking from story to story very quickly about this kill and that kill. The story is also punctuated with input from his wife taking you into what it's like being the wife of a SEAL. At times I read what she had to say and while it was remotely interesting I tended to find myself flicking through the pages where her text appeared.
Overall: I found the first half a great read, the second half I struggled with because of the amount of incidents covered... it often felt like it wasn't going anywhere.
