    Main description
Although the 1987 book on the archaeology of the sites of Catholic abbeys and priories managed by English Heritage (formerly the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England) bears the same title as this work, author Coppack (a monastic scholar who works for English Heritage) has substantially rewritten the work based on new research by himself and others such that this is essentially a new book. He synthesizes the archaeological research in chapters that discuss the archaeology of monasteries in general, the monastic church, the cloister buildings, the wider precinct, sanitation and the use of water, and the impact of the suppression of monastic life after Henry VIII's break with Rome in 1534.
